A Fisherman’s Bay lunch with Ernie

By 26 June 2021No Comments

My new weekend pleasure is cycling to Morecambe Bay for a paddle & a fisherman’s lunch.

The Bay cycleway is a terrific route stretching from Glasson Dock on the Lune Estuary, to Walney Island on the Irish Sea. The 80 miles can be broken down into handy sized chunks, I am a fan of there & back 20-30 mile routes.

One of Lancashire’s oldest food delicacies is potted Morecambe Bay shrimps and to enjoy these little guys in a all their glory, here’s my hints & tips:

  • Buy or make a fresh sourdough loaf. TOTI at the Cartford Inn is an excellent weekend option.
  • Head to Port of Lancaster Smokehouse for potted shrimps. Park car and prep bikes.
  • Put warm sourdough in a backpack, next to potted shrimp, allow the butter to gentle soften. Pack a butter knife or teaspoon for scooping.
  • Cycle to Morecambe taking in the Estuary wildlife, Lancaster’s historic quays, don’t forget to wave or dance with Eric on the front.
  • At the far edge of Morecambe, take off shoes and socks, spread delicate spiced shrimps, soaked in butter onto torn chunks of sourdough and go for a paddle. Handkerchief on head is optional.
  • Marvel at one of the greatest bay views in the world before your eyes,  in full HD panoramic.

For hundreds of years Fishermen would have stood eating bay shrimps, mapping the cloudscapes above. It is the by far the finest place to experience their potted flavour and history. Plus if you want sing along with comedy legends Morecambe & Wise (the very wise, Ernie) fill your lungs and open your heart….

Bring me sunshine

In your smile

Bring me laughter

All the while

In this world where we live

There should be more happiness

So much joy you can give

To each brand new bright tomorrow
